How a rainwater system fits together

Ten parts carry the rain from the roof to the drain. When one of them fails, the water goes somewhere it shouldn't.

02 Why it matters

A blocked gutter doesn't stay a gutter problem

    It fills up

    Leaves, moss, weeds and debris collect in the gutter and block the outlet.

  2. 02

    The water goes elsewhere

    It spills over the front, runs behind the gutter or down the brickwork.

  3. 03

    The damage spreads

    Fascias rot, slates and tiles at the eaves are damaged, and walls get damp inside.

Overflowing

Water spills over the front in heavy rain: usually a blocked gutter or outlet, or brackets that have lost their fall.

Dripping joints

Water drips from unions and corners when the seals have perished or the gutter has shifted.

Sagging runs

Brackets broken or loose, so water pools and the run bows.

Blocked downpipes

Leaves and moss stuck in the offset bend or at the bottom, so the gutter backs up.

Damp walls

Dark streaks or damp inside where water has been running down the brickwork.
